- 1 medium green cabbage, chopped into bite size pieces
- 1 to 1.5 pounds ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 to 1.5 cups cooked rice (white or brown)
- 1 can crushed tomatoes (or tomato sauce)
- 2 to 3 tablespoons tomato paste (optional)
- 1 to 2 teaspoons salt, plus pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning
- 1 cup beef broth or water
- Optional: shredded mozzarella or cheddar for topping
Instructions
- Soften the cabbage by simmering in salted water or microwaving until tender.
- Cook the onion with ground beef until no longer pink, then stir in garlic, seasonings, and tomatoes.
- Assemble the layers in a casserole dish, starting with sauce, then half the cabbage, rice, and meat sauce. Repeat.
- Bake covered at 375°F for about 35 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes.
- Rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Ensure the cabbage is softened for best texture. This casserole also holds well for leftovers and tastes even better the next day.
