A vibrant and comforting dish that captures the essence of traditional Mexican flavors with savory broth, hearty ingredients, and delightful dumplings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 lb protein of choice (chicken, beef, or beans)
  • 4 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 cups diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups masa harina
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 pinch sugar

  • Crumbled queso fresco, for garnish
  • Tortilla chips or corn tortillas, for serving

Instructions

  1. Sauté onions and garlic in a large pot until fragrant.
  2. Add protein of choice and cook until browned.
  3. Pour in the broth and tomatoes, then stir in spices. Bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat and let simmer for 30 minutes to develop flavors.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix masa harina with water to create tamale dumpling dough.
  6. Drop dumplings into the simmering soup and let them steam through.
  7. Garnish with fresh cilantro and avocado before serving.

Notes

For best results, use low-sodium broth and adjust spice levels to your taste. Fresh herbs can enhance flavor right before serving.
