Description

Delightfully chewy and golden-brown soft homemade pretzels, perfect for snacking or sharing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit until frothy, about 5 minutes.
  2. Add bread flour and salt to the yeast mixture and stir until combined. Knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  3. Let the dough rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  4. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
  6. Divide the dough and roll each piece into ropes. Shape into pretzel forms.
  7. Carefully boil each pretzel in the baking soda solution for 30 seconds, then place on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Remove and brush with melted butter, then sprinkle with coarse salt.

Notes

For a sweeter version, add cinnamon sugar after baking. Experiment with toppings like sesame seeds or garlic powder.
