Description

A classic dish that brings warmth and comfort to any meal with day-old bread, fragrant herbs, and sautéed vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 10 cups day-old sourdough or French bread, cubed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon thyme (fresh or dried)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your baking dish.
  2. Cube the day-old bread and let it dry out if needed.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté diced onions and chopped celery until soft (about 5 minutes).
  4. In a large bowl, combine the sautéed vegetables with the dried bread cubes. Pour in chicken broth while gently tossing to moisten evenly. Season with sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Transfer the mixture to the baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove foil for the last 10 minutes to achieve a golden crust.
  6. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use day-old bread for the best texture. Feel free to add your favorite mix-ins, such as cooked sausage, nuts, or dried fruits. Adjust the herbs according to your preference.
