A delicious and flavorful Chinese barbecue pork dish, marinated and roasted to perfection.

  • Total Time: 135 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 lbs pork butt or country-style ribs
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup Shao Hsing rice wine
  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
  • 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger
  • 2 minced garlic cloves

Instructions

  1. Marinate the pork by combining all ingredients in a bowl, ensuring the meat is evenly coated.
  2. Poke the meat 10-12 times with a fork to help it absorb the marinade.
  3. Cover and refrigerate for 3-5 hours, or up to 24 hours for more flavor.
  4. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  5. Place the marinated pork on a rack in a roasting pan.
  6. Roast for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, basting occasionally with leftover marinade.
  7. Let the pork rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a healthier version, use lean pork cuts and lower sugar in the marinade. Try to cook at lower temperatures to minimize health risks.
