These delectable mini blooming onions are crunchy on the outside and sweet on the inside, perfect for parties or gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 4 small to medium-sized sweet onions (like Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Cut each onion into sections without slicing all the way through to allow them to bloom.
  2. Soak the onions in a seasoned buttermilk mixture for at least 10 minutes.
  3. Dredge the soaked onions in a mixture of flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the onions in batches until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove from oil and place on a wire rack to cool.
  7. Serve with dipping sauce.

Notes

For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
