Ingredients

- 4 small to medium-sized sweet onions (like Vidalia or Walla Walla)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Oil for frying
Instructions
- Cut each onion into sections without slicing all the way through to allow them to bloom.
- Soak the onions in a seasoned buttermilk mixture for at least 10 minutes.
- Dredge the soaked onions in a mixture of flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the onions in batches until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from oil and place on a wire rack to cool.
- Serve with dipping sauce.

For a gluten-free version, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend.
