Description

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar until light.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla, mixing well.
  3. Whisk together dry ingredients and fold into the wet mixture.
  4. Add buttermilk and mix until combined.
  5. Chill the dough for 30–60 minutes.
  6. Scoop dough into 1½-tablespoon balls and roll in powdered sugar.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes until tops crack and edges set.
  8. Let cool on a wire rack.

Notes

For a deeper flavor, use Dutch-process cocoa and gel food coloring for a more vibrant color. Make sure to chill the dough to prevent spreading.
