- 3 large yellow onions (about 2 lb), thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 cup dry white wine (or 1 tablespoon sherry vinegar)
- 1 cup full-fat sour cream
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 4 ounces softened cream cheese
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/2 teaspoon dried)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon chopped chives
Instructions
- Slowly cook sliced onions in butter and olive oil over medium-low heat, stirring every 4–5 minutes for 30–40 minutes until deep golden brown.
- Deglaze with white wine and cook for an additional 2 minutes, then cool completely.
- In a bowl, whisk together sour cream, mayonnaise, and cream cheese until smooth.
- Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, black pepper, and chives; mix well.
- Fold in the cooled caramelized onions.
- Chill for at least 1 hour before serving to allow flavors to meld.
Notes
Can be served with chips, veggies, or as a sandwich spread. Store in an airtight container for 3–4 days.
