Description

A gourmet French onion dip made with slowly caramelized onions and rich dairy, perfect for parties and gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions (about 600 g), thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (or 2 tbsp water)
  • 1 cup (240 g) sour cream
  • 1/2 cup (120 g) mayonnaise
  • 4 oz (113 g) softened cream cheese
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 11.5 cups cooled caramelized onions
  • Chopped chives for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a heavy-bottomed skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring every few minutes until deeply golden, about 35–40 minutes.
  3. Deglaze the pan with balsamic vinegar or water at the end and let the onions cool.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together sour cream, mayonnaise, cream cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and pepper.
  5. Fold in the cooled caramelized onions.
  6. Chill for at least 2 hours (overnight is ideal) before serving. Garnish with chopped chives.

Notes

For best flavor, chill overnight. Serve with kettle chips, bread, or vegetables.
