Description
A gourmet French onion dip made with slowly caramelized onions and rich dairy, perfect for parties and gatherings.

- 2 large yellow onions (about 600 g), thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar (or 2 tbsp water)
- 1 cup (240 g) sour cream
- 1/2 cup (120 g) mayonnaise
- 4 oz (113 g) softened cream cheese
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1–1.5 cups cooled caramelized onions
- Chopped chives for garnish
Instructions
- In a heavy-bottomed skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium-low heat.
- Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring every few minutes until deeply golden, about 35–40 minutes.
- Deglaze the pan with balsamic vinegar or water at the end and let the onions cool.
- In a bowl, whisk together sour cream, mayonnaise, cream cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt and pepper.
- Fold in the cooled caramelized onions.
- Chill for at least 2 hours (overnight is ideal) before serving. Garnish with chopped chives.
Notes
For best flavor, chill overnight. Serve with kettle chips, bread, or vegetables.
