Description

A simple and satisfying loaf of crusty French bread with a crisp crust and tender crumb, perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups (360 g) all-purpose or bread flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 1 cup (240 ml) warm water (105–110°F)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  1. Mix the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast in a bowl.
  2. Add warm water and olive oil to the mixture.
  3. Knead the dough by hand for 8–10 minutes or in a stand mixer for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled (about 45–60 minutes).
  5. Shape into a loaf and proof for another 20–30 minutes.
  6. Score the top of the loaf.
  7. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 20–25 minutes with a pan of hot water in the oven.

Notes

For a crisp crust, use steam during baking by placing a pan of hot water in the oven.
