Description

A stunningly dramatic, moist black velvet cake perfect for Halloween celebrations.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup Dutch process cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp lemon juice)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon black gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix wet ingredients: buttermilk, oil, eggs, vanilla, and black food coloring.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter evenly into prepared cake pans.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Let the cake layers cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Frost with cream cheese or dark chocolate buttercream once cooled.
