Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Red food coloring

Instructions

  2. In another bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough in half. Tint one half with red food coloring.
  6. Roll each portion into rectangles, stack them, and roll into a log.
  7. Wrap the log in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Slice the chilled log into 1/4-inch thick rounds and place on a baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden.
  11. Let cool on wire racks before serving.

Notes

Chilling the dough is essential for better handling and to prevent spreading during baking.
