- 4 large Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: bacon pieces, chives, green onions, mushrooms, nutmeg
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Melt the butter in a pan over medium heat, then whisk in the flour until smooth.
- Slowly add the milk while whisking continuously until the mixture thickens.
- Stir in the shredded cheddar and Gruyère cheese until smooth and creamy.
- In a baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by half of the cheese sauce. Repeat the layers.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes until potatoes are tender.
- Remove the foil and broil for an additional 15 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For best results, slice the potatoes evenly and rinse before layering. Customize with your favorite add-ins like bacon or herbs.
