Description

A unique and flavorful tart featuring sweet caramelized onions, crisp apples, and sharp cheddar cheese, all encased in a flaky crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 store-bought or homemade tart crust
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 35 tablespoons ice-cold water (for crust)
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Butter, for cooking

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions in a skillet over low heat for about 30 minutes until they are golden brown, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add the sliced apples to the skillet and cook until they are just softening, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle a pinch of brown sugar, salt, and pepper, adjusting to taste.
  4. If the pan gets too brown, add a tablespoon of water or white wine to deglaze.
  5. Preheat the oven as per crust instructions, then fill the tart shell with the onion and apple mixture and top with grated cheddar.
  6. Bake according to tart crust instructions until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.

Notes

Experiment with different cheeses or add ingredients like bacon or nuts for a twist.
